Almost 80% of graduates
from Scottish Universities obtain their first appointment
in Scotland, in a wide range of organisations. Many large
companies have bases in Scotland (predominantly Glasgow and
Edinburgh) even though the main company address is in England.
However, be aware that placing limitations on your job search
means that there may be fewer opportunities to apply for so
you should be proactive in seeking appropriate vacancies.
The basic difference
between job hunting in Scotland and excluding opportunities
outside Scotland is that:
You
will be limiting the number of applications
You may have less choice
Companies will be smaller on average
Local competition may be greater
It may take longer to find the first
graduate post
If you live in a rural area you will
have particular issues to deal with
If your reason for
job seeking in Scotland is that you don't want to leave the
area you are living in, remember that some employers require
mobility, especially in the training period and even sometimes
in carrying out the job. Scotland is a small country: wherever
you locate for work in Scotland, getting home is unlikely
to take more than a few hours. If relocating to another city
would improve your job prospects consider carefully the aspects
that might worry you and how you could overcome these. If
you are looking at an area of employment where opportunities
are few and far between, you would be well advised to cast
the net wide in geographical terms to improve your chances.
Think carefully about your choices, in terms of what job(s)
you are looking for, where you want to work and plan your
strategy accordingly.
