Approaches to decision making:

  • Problems with many possible solutions - creative brainstorming

  • Problems with one best-suited solution - analysis


Range of group decisions:

  • Individual actually making the decision, to

  • Groups of people making the decision.

Influences on Group Decisions
Peer Pressure:

  • Members are reluctant to go against the majority viewpoint

  • Critical reasoning stifled leading to wrong decisions being made - groupthink

  • Successful groups are over confident and so take riskier decisions

Majority view:

  • Groups make more extreme decisions than each individual's decisions

  • Group polarisation

Pulling your weight:

  • Individuals put in less effort into achieving decisions than other members
    Social loafing


Team meetings
When planning consider:

  • Timing -- when to hold the meeting

  • Purpose - why the meeting is being held

  • Location - where to hold the meeting

During the meeting be aware of:

  • Timing

  • Good chairmanship

  • Interruptions

  • Actions and agreement

After the meeting, the minutes should:

  • Be circulated to all members and others if appropriate

  • Focus on matters discussed, agreements reached and actions
