Considerations for an effective presenter:

  • Approach

  • Voice

  • Attitude and tone

  • Eye contact

  • Dress

Approach building blocks:

  • Arrive in good time

  • Introduce yourself

  • State the aims and objectives

  • Outline the presentation structure

  • Outline your policy for responses

  • Outline your policy for breaks

Summarise the key points
Sequence as:

  • Tell them what you are going to talk about

  • Talk about it, and

  • Tell them what you have talked about

Voice

  • Clearly heard, even at the back of the room

  • Change of pace - to make your presentation dynamic

  • Pause to emphasise important points

Attitude and tone

  • Tone - upbeat and positive

  • Attitude - friendly and credible

  • Use of words and change of pace

  • Positive mannerisms open body gestures, changing stance, nodding and smiling

Eye Contact

  • Connect with and involve the audience by effective eye contact.

  • Dwell for a few moments on the audience members

Dress

  • According to the type of presentation.

  • And remember the basic rules of "smartness" hair, clothes, shoes

Techniques for handling nerves

  • Breathing, stretching and relaxation exercises just 2 minutes concentrating on your breathing can make a difference

  • Visualising the audience out of context

  • Establishing rapport with your audience as they arrive

  • Properly prepared and rehearsed

Using visual aids

  • Ensure the equipment is clean and working

  • Make sure the equipment is positioned so all the audience can see the visuals and that it does not block their overall view

  • Don't walk between the screen and the projector

  • Don't turn your back on the audience and lose contact

Team presentations 
Co-ordinate activities at all stages to ensure:

  • A logical sequence of delivery

  • No overlap and duplication

  • Smooth transition when moving from one presenter to another

Electronic presentations

  • Look straight into the camera lens

  • Keep movements to a minimum

  • Speak slightly slower than normal and have clear pronunciation

  • Stand or sit as close to the microphone as possible

  • Visual aids  - interfaced with a computer or get a copy to your audience prior to transmission
