Use of visual aids
Visual aids require professionalism, they are only as good as the person using them.

Some simple steps when using visual aids:

  • Ensure the equipment is clean and working, including markers if using a flipchart.

  • Make sure the projector or flipchart is positioned so all the audience can see the visuals and that the equipment does not block their overall view

  • Tilt the screen or projector to eliminate the 'keystone' effect

  • If using a Powerpoint presentation, start with a holding welcome page, don't be going through a computer start-up or your hard disc when beginning your presentation

  • Don't walk between the screen and the projector

  • Don't turn your back on the audience and loose contact. If you are writing on a flipchart - talk, write and talk again - don't talk to the flipchart

  • It is acceptable to quickly glance at the overhead screen to ensure that the visual aid is properly aligned and displayed but do not read the visual aid if this means turning your back to the audience.
