Presentations 2
Effective presentations (contd)
Approach - the presentation delivery building blocks
Let's look at the building blocks that make up your approach:
-
Arrive in good time
-
Introduce yourself
-
State the aims and objectives
-
Outline the presentation structure
-
Outline your policy for responses
-
Outline your policy for breaks
Arrive in good time
Turn up in good time to set up the equipment (if this needs to be done)
and to welcome the audience as they arrive This immediately begins the
process of 'connecting' with the audience and presents a calm, composed
and professional image. It is unprofessional to turn up late, and probably
flustered.
Introduce yourself
Introduce yourself to the audience and provide some brief background
information perhaps to underline your expertise or qualifications for
being there, and explain why the audience should listen to you
State the aims and objectives
State the aims and objectives and the relevance of the presentation
to the audience. This is a useful way of 'connecting' with the audience
and getting their attention.
Outline the presentation structure
Outline the structure, introducing the main sections and provide a brief
description of what you intend to talk about in each of the main sections.
Outline your policy for responses
Whether you will take questions at any time or only at the end of the
presentation. The latter approach is perhaps easier for the presenter
to control, while the former means the presenter must make sure that questions
raised during the presentation do not absorb time that should be devoted
to the presentation.
Outline your policy for breaks and responses
When, where and how long, and the need for comfort breaks. Also whether
or not there will be group or syndicate work.
