Writing 1

Writing the Presentation
You should now be ready to start writing the presentation.

Make sure the structure and sequence is logical so:

  • The audience find it easy to follow

  • You find it easier to deliver

  • It has a beginning / middle / end

  • You get your message across

Presenters have different approaches to this. Writing out the presentation in paper format is a suggested approach that can be modified as you become more accomplished.

Writing out approach
Plan an outline of the presentation covering the main section or subject headings
Write out a first draft following the traditional format of:

  • say what you are going to talk about (introduction)

  • talk about it (the main body)

  • say what you have talked about (conclusion)

Introduction - try using the mnemonic INTRO:

I Introduce yourself
N Explain the need for them to listen (WIIFM) - grab their attention
T Timing, how long it will last
R Responses, when will you take questions
Objectives of the presentation

Main body

  • Bear in mind the mnemonic ABC:  Accuracy, Brevity, Clarity

  • Introduce in a logical sequence

  • Break information down into clearly defined chunks

  • Check understanding

  • Flag the way forward  'moving on to a new&'

Conclusion

  • Summarise and refer back to the objectives

  • Point the way ahead - are there next steps?

  • Leave group with something - for example, thanks, praise

  • Put the draft aside to 'bed into your mind'

Review the draft to ensure you have the right sequence and amount of information to meet the aims and objectives of the presentation , if necessary make changes

Finally, review the main sections and subject headings to ensure that the sequence is logical and the presentation 'flows'.
