What is a project?
Projects are diverse. They range in type and size but all have similar characteristics or features, including:

  • Objectives

  • Deliverables Aims/Outcomes

  • Temporary concentration of resources

  • Budget/Resources

  • Uncertainty/Risk

  • Lifecycle

  • Stakeholder expectations

  • Scope (what's in, what's not)

    Some definitions of a project:

    'Unique venture with a beginning and an end conducted by people to meet established goals within parameters of cost schedule and quality.'
    (Buchanan and Boddy 1992)

    'A project is a set of activities which has a defined start point, a defined end state, pursues a defined goal and uses a defined set of resource.'
    (Slack et al 1998)
