Email 3

Email appropriateness
You will probably have used email at university, for social communications and maybe for working. But when using email in a business context you need to consider:

  • Approach

  • Confidentiality

  • Delivery

Approach
Language and layout should be as for writing business letters. Your reader still expects you to be brief, professional, positive and to the point. Compare with social emails when a much more relaxed approach to style and language might be more suitable.

Confidentiality
Is the information in any way sensitive or confidential? If it is, then email may not be a suitable way of communicating it as emails are not totally secure and you could find your email circulated to others.

Delivery
Is email the best method for communicating your information? - it may be fast and immediate, but in some cases, face to face communicating or a formal business letter might be more effective.
